There are several methods of obtaining skills gems:
- As a reward for completing a quest (see Quest Reward Gems).
- Purchased from town vendors once a certain quest is complete.
- As the result of a vendor recipe (see Vendor_recipe_system#Skill_Gems).
- Random drop from monster, chest or strongbox.
- Random offer from a master (see here for a list)
Since the latter two options are random, some gems are more difficult to obtain and potentially more valuable.
Drop-only gems
The following gems are considered drop-only gems:

These gems are not offered by vendors or quest rewards, however they can be obtained through a recipe.

Vaal skill gems
All Vaal Gems cannot be purchased or dropped. There are several ways to obtain them:
- from a corrupted area
- by using a Vaal OrbVaal OrbStack Size: 10Corrupts an item, modifying it unpredictablyRight click this item then left click an item to corrupt it. Corrupted items cannot be modified again.
Shift click to unstack. on an existing skill gem - from a strongbox with a suffix "of Corruption"
